DO I NEED A TUMMY TUCK TREATMENT OR LIPOSUCTION?
Let's face it, very few of us over the age of twelve are unaffected by abdominal fat. If you're one of the fortunate few, I admire your healthy habits and body confidence, and the rest of this essay will likely be of little interest to you. However, I believe the majority of you are still reading. First and foremost, there is diet and exercise. I know I didn't have to tell you that; everyone already knows. But, truly, none of the other options work for folks who simply eat too much and do too little, so this is the one you need.
Ok. It used to be simple: either liposuction, which removes fat, or excisional surgery, which removes both the skin and the fat beneath it. But then surgeons got fancy and started combining liposuction and excisional surgery. Then, as medical science advanced, non-liposuction methods of fat destruction were developed. Then came the pharmacologists, who began synthesising fat-dissolving substances. Then everyone started coming up with their own versions of each of those, some of which worked better than others, and it all got a little complicated.
Fat removal alone will work if there isn't too much fat to remove and the skin quality is good; however, if the skin quality is poor and there is still a lot of fat to remove, the skin will need to be retightened to achieve the greatest results. For cases in between, the surgeon must exercise judgment and the patient must control expectations.
So, what does this entail in terms of improving one's tummy in practice? You're unlikely to get a nice result from anything other than a belly tuck if you've had four pregnancies, lost a lot of weight, and spent your twenties chain smoking beneath a sun bed.
If you're young, any of the non-excisional methods – liposuction or fat freezing (each has its own set of benefits and drawbacks that you should discuss with your doctor) – will work well for you. The same logic applies to whichever portion of your body you're hating at the moment. The moral of the story is to take care of your skin.
